Social networks are a fantastic way to stay in touch with loved ones, share content, and make new connections. Early social network platforms were created in the nineteenth century.
The first one was a postal system that allowed the exchange of letters between members who belonged to different communities; these correspondents would then share their news with others in their home village or region. This was before email was invented and people had to rely on snail mail (yes, really 😆 ).
In today's world, there's more than just email and smartphones. There are video calls, texting apps like WhatsApp Messenger which allow users to communicate privately without needing phone service providers; there are video-based services like Skype or Hangouts which let participants talk to each other as if they were in person.
The first mobile social network platform was SixDegrees, founded in 1997. It enabled users to upload a profile to the service, and exchange messages with other members that were logged on at the same time as them. The site was originally designed for use on desktop computers but eventually made its way onto mobile devices and became one of the earliest examples of a mobile social network application (app).
The functionality of SixDegrees was relatively basic at first, but over time it gained more features and users.
Friendster was a social network website that was launched in 2002. It was one of the first social networking websites in the world and it was founded by Jonathan Abrams, who at the time worked at Excite.com, which was later acquired by Ask Jeeves. In 2003, Friendster stated that over million accounts had been created on its site.
Before Friendster underwent a redesign, users could get in touch with other users, keep in touch with them, and share media and online material with them. The website was additionally used for dating and for learning about new activities, music, and events. Through profiles and networks, users could communicate with other members and share movies, images, messages, and comments. It is regarded as one of the first social networking sites.
The popularity of Friendster declined after 2006 when it started to become eclipsed by MySpace and Facebook. In 2008 Friendster shut down operations due to financial issues.
You may have heard of MySpace, Livedoor Blog and Orkut. These were some of the first social networking sites that gained traction in the early 2000s. But did you know that Blogger.com was launched way back in 1999? There were several other websites for writers to connect with each other and build their audience on the Internet.
MySpace was the largest social networking site in the world, with over 100 million registered users and more than 65 million unique visitors globally. It was acquired by News Corporation (the parent company of Fox News Channel) for $580 million in 2005. MySpace also attracted huge traffic, which helped to make it one of the top 10 most-visited websites on the Internet at its peak in 2006.
In 2007, however, Facebook surpassed MySpace as most popular online destination for Americans under 35 years old; by 2009, MySpace had lost 80% of its visitors since its peak a year earlier. In 2011, Rupert Murdoch's News Corp sold MySpace for about $35 million to Specific Media Group and pop singer Justin Timberlake who acquired an ownership stake in addition to becoming chairman and CEO respectively.
In 2005, Yahoo! launched Yahoo! 360°, a social networking and personal communication web. Users were able to publish photographs from Yahoo! Photos, exchange blogs and lists, build and share public profiles, and discover who was online at the moment among their friends.
Additionally, 360° had a part called "Friends Updates" that provided a quick summary of each friend's most recent news (e.g. blog posts, updated lists or newly shared photos). This service was never formally introduced because Yahoo! abruptly stopped working on it in 2008.
Mark Zuckerberg founded the online social networking and media platform Facebook in 2004. Initially open only to Harvard students, membership has since grown to include students from other North American universities and, as of 2006, anybody over the age of 13. Facebook claimed in 2020 to have 2.8 billion monthly active users as of 2020.
With its headquarters in San Bruno, California, YouTube is an American social media and internet video sharing company. On February 14, 2005, Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim officially debuted it. After Google Search, it is the second most frequented website and is now owned by Google.
