Online Friends vs. Offline Friends

Even though Gen Z have grown up with online friends, that doesn’t mean they’re opposed to hanging out in person. In fact, statistics show that Gen Z are far more likely to hang out with their in-person friends than their older counterparts.

One of the reasons why this generation values friendship so much is because of the bonds they have developed online throughout the years. These relationships are different from those formed in high school or through extracurricular activities, but just as meaningful and lasting in adulthood.

Online Friends are Easy to Make

According to Pew Research, 57% of teens and young adults have made an online friend, and online gameplay and social media are the most common digital platforms for meeting new friends. 72% of all teens spend more time with their friends on social media – 23% do so daily; 59% video chat with friends; 7% video chat with friends daily.

As expected, the more time Gen Z spend with online friends, the more internet consumption they make. About 98% of Gen Z uses a smartphones, making them rely on several means of internet connection. Like how 70% of 18-29 internet users in the United States have a broadband network in the house, according to Pew.

That said, it's easy to find people with similar interests to you online, and it's easy to connect with them. You can message them, chat with them, and even video call them. You can also easily block someone if they're being too annoying or if you just don't want to talk to them anymore.

And unlike real-life friends, you can choose how much or how little you want to interact with them. If you need some time for yourself, all you have to do is ignore their messages for a while. On the other hand, if you want to get closer to someone new, all you have to do is send them a message!

But a lot of people don’t know how to connect with friends online because sometimes it's hard to know what exactly to say. So here are some tips on how to make friends through social media:

1. Ask questions about what they like - this will help both of you feel more comfortable and make things more interesting.

2. Share something about yourself - this will help break the ice by telling them something personal that might interest them.

3. Check out their Instagram profile - sometimes we forget that other people might be interested in what we post on our own profiles! Posting pictures on your Instagram is a great way to spark up a conversation with someone else who follows you there.

Online Friends can be Global

Being able to connect with people from all over the world is one of the main reasons why online friends are becoming more popular. With social media, you can connect with anyone, no matter where they live. And, with video calling and messaging apps, it's easy to keep in touch with your online friends, no matter how far away they are.

In fact, some Gen Z don't even have any real-life friends outside of their online ones. They may not see their offline friends as often due to school schedules or extracurricular activities. But, they still rely on their online friends for support and companionship when life gets tough.

Gen Z have a much stronger sense of community than Millennials did when they were growing up because of this strong connection with other young people who share similar interests and struggles. The internet has allowed them to find communities that they wouldn't have found otherwise. Some might come across toxic communities too, but these seem rarer.

Online Friends are Always there to Connect with

Whether you’re feeling happy or sad, your online friends are always there for you. They’re easy to talk to and you can share anything with them without feeling judged. You can be yourself around them and they accept you for who you are.

They’re also a great way to connect with people who share your interests. So, if you're into sports, music, fashion, or video games, it's certain that there's someone out there with the same interest as you! Another thing that makes online friendships so popular is the anonymity of it all.

New Social Media Platforms are Powered by Gen Z

It's no secret that social media platforms have become increasingly popular among young people. What is less known, however, is that these platforms are being used in different ways by different generations. For example, Gen Z is more likely to use social media to connect with friends online rather than in person.

There are a few reasons for this trend. First, social media provides a way to connect with friends who live far away. Second, online friends can be more easily controlled and curated than in-person friends.

Much like we have seen with the rise of TikTok, new social platforms are powered by younger-skewing audiences. And the same will be true for our streaming platform, Calypsoroom, which will not only appeal to the already-successful young creators on other platforms, but to their audience and to the next generation.

How Will this Change in the Future?

According to a recent study, the number of young people who say they have no close friends has tripled since the 1980s. This trend is being driven in part by the rise of social media and the internet, which has made it easier for people to connect with each other online.

In the future, this trend is likely to continue, as more and more people turn to the internet for their social needs. This could have a number of consequences, both positive and negative. On the negative side, it could lead to more isolation and loneliness, as people spend more time interacting with screens instead of real people. On the positive side, it could lead to more opportunities for people to connect with others who share their interests.
